Most of the countries in Africa have remained under the perpetual domination of the colonial master until the rise of nationalists who show action and ideas for liberating the country. The study deals extensively to know how the citizen deals with their nation for the development of their nation and how people feel for the betterment of the country.

INTRODUCTION

  • BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

Nationalism and patriotism are indeed an age-long political cum administrative phenomenon extensive ostensibly used as a tool for governance during the political transformation of Africa, i.e. colonialism. Saying the doctrine mentioned above of necessity for a peaceful co-existence of state autonomy and or sovereignty has been polarized with particular angry reference to South Africa. (Frank Uzochukwu 2014).

Nationalism involves national identity in contrast with the related construct of patriotism, which involves the social conditioning and personal behaviours that support a state’s decisions and actions.

The widespread patriotic nationalism was massively augmented by the political compulsions of the late 18th century. The political development of nationalism and push for popular sovereignty culminated with the ethical and national revolution of Europe. This study is focused on the development of Africa. (A case study of South Africa.

Therefore it helps to know what can be done to It and bring good governance and exemplary life to other countries.

 

  • STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Research has shown that Nationalism and patriotism are a good share of our society and the nation that bring about National Development. The study of South Africa during and after the apartheid period will focus on this study.

– Inequalities between the colonial and the South African citizen during the apartheid period.

– Discrimination of the Nationalists from the political system of government

– Racism and Disenfranchise occurs during the apartheid period. What after the apartheid period.

– Colonization is still in existence in South Africa to date; how apt is this statement.

– Racial separation affected the educational system of South Africa during the apartheid period.

– Restriction of international trade between South Africa and other African counties due to the apartheid period.

1.3. PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

This study aims to determine the effect of nationalism and patriotism on good governance by comparing pre-post apartheid of South Africa and suggest a probable or possible solution for other countries that had not embraced it.

  • RESEARCH QUESTIONS

To access South Africa’s Nationalist and patriotic ideology, the following question was postulated.

  1. Will patriotic ideology in South Africa establish a universal political change from the apartheid period?
  2. Does colonialism in South Africa during the apartheid period influence the quality standard of education in South Africa?
  3. South Africa’s achievement and development till data is not a product of the Nationalists. How true is this statement?
  4. Is there any significant relationship between the pre and post-apartheid period in the economic and political development of South Africa?

 

1.5. RESEARCH HYPOTHESIS

Ho1 – There is no significant relationship between Nationalism and patriotism

Ho2 – There is no significant relationship good between patriotic ideology and good governance of South Africa

Ho3 – There is no significant difference between the pre and post-apartheid period in South Africa

Ho4 – There is no significant relationship between the colonial life pattern and the Native lifestyle of South African people.

 

1.6. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The result of this research study will play a significant in mobilizing and re-orientating the people and the government on Nationalism and patriotism as a tool for national development and planning. It will provoke further study on Nationalism and patriotism and other variable related to it.

1.7. SCOPE OF THE STUDY

This research work is within the environment of South Africa, during and after the apartheid period, toward the socio-economic of the country.

1.8. DEFINITION OF CONCEPTUAL ANALYSIS

Nationalism – It can be defined as a certain form of unity, oneness and consciousness of a sense of belonging to a nation

Patriotism can be seen as love for one’s country, and such individuals respect/her country.

A nation – A group of people with common ancestry, language, dress, and culture living together in a geographical area.

Political – The public affairs of a country

Politics – Is the art of controlling and manipulating people’s affairs to bring about changes in government.

Development – The act or process of developing or the significant consequence of an event.
